Need a locksmith in Tappan?
Our shop is 27 minutes away.

Tappan is one of Rockland's oldest settlements — the DeWint House has been standing since 1700, the village green dates back to the Revolutionary era, and the surrounding residential streets include homes older than the country. Our shop is on Old Nyack Turnpike in Spring Valley, 25-to-30 minutes by car. The work here leans heavily toward historic hardware, careful closing rekeys in period homes, and the standard residential mix beyond the historic core.

Tappan is an unincorporated hamlet in the Town of Orangetown, notable for genuine Revolutionary-era history — the DeWint House (Washington's headquarters, now the oldest structure in Rockland County), the Old '76 House tavern still operating on the village green, the Dutch Reformed Church and historic burying ground. The residential neighborhoods include a higher-than-average concentration of homes from the 18th and 19th centuries alongside standard 20th-century construction. That housing age profile shapes our Tappan work in a specific way.
Safety Note

What we know about Tappan

Tappan has more genuinely historic residential housing than almost anywhere else in Rockland — 18th-century Dutch colonial farmhouses alongside 19th-century Victorians alongside mid-century builds alongside new construction. That housing stock drives a specific kind of locksmith work: original hardware on homes that were built before modern lock manufacturing, mortise and rim locks that predate the Civil War, skeleton-key interior doors whose keys have been missing for generations. We approach this work carefully — extract without damaging irreplaceable woodwork, source period-appropriate parts where available, install modern cylinders behind original trim when that's the only path forward.

Beyond the historic homes, Tappan has a standard residential footprint with closings, lockouts, and the usual mix. The drive from our shop is one of the longer Tier 3 runs — 25-to-30 minutes on a normal day, longer in afternoon rush. We factor that into every ETA quote. The work here is sometimes slower and more careful than a quick modern-lock rekey; we price it honestly and walk you through the options before starting.

Residential
Historic home hardware service
Usually 45–60 min on-site

Tappan's historic housing stock includes locks older than any currently manufactured replacement. We handle them with the care they deserve: extract without damage to original woodwork, identify the make and era where possible, source period-appropriate parts from specialty suppliers, and tell you honestly when a lock is past preservation. Where a modern cylinder is the right answer we install it behind the original trim so the house's period integrity stays intact. We don't push replacements we wouldn't install in our own home.

Residential
Rekey after a Tappan closing
Usually 30–60 min on-site

Tappan closings take longer than average because the hardware inventory takes longer to assess. An 18th-century farmhouse closing can have eight to twelve entry points across a main house, summer kitchen, and outbuildings, with mixed hardware from five different decades. We walk every door with you, flag what's modern and rekeyable versus what's period and needs preservation treatment, and quote accordingly. A modest Tappan closing still runs under $300; a full historic property rekey can run higher — honest pricing either way.

Residential
House lockout — any time
Usually 35–45 min to arrive

Tappan is our longer drive and lockouts here run 35-to-45 minutes end-to-end. When you call, tell us the cross-street and any landmark (near the village green, near the Dutch Reformed Church, in the newer developments, etc.) so we can find you quickly. Non-destructive entry regardless of lock age — we're not drilling anything that doesn't absolutely require it.

How we get to you

Routes clear · standard ETA

Our shop is on Old Nyack Turnpike in Spring Valley. To Tappan we head east to Route 303, south through Orangetown into Tappan proper — 25 to 30 minutes on a normal day. The longer drive time is partly distance, partly the Orangetown corridor's tendency to slow in rush hours. For historic village addresses near the green, we approach via Main Street; for the newer residential developments, we sometimes cut through Sparkill or Blauvelt depending on exact location.

Questions we hear from Tappan

The ones that come up most often. Real answers, not marketing ones.

Are you located in Tappan?
No. Our shop is at 274 Old Nyack Turnpike in Spring Valley, 25-to-30 minutes from Tappan via Route 303 south. We dispatch to Tappan regularly and cover the full 10983 ZIP including the historic village and the newer residential developments.
How fast can you get to Tappan?
Usually 35-to-45 minutes from when you call. Tappan is one of our longer Tier 3 drives — we factor that into the ETA and don't pretend otherwise. Rush hours and weekends add another 5-10 minutes.
Do you work on historic home hardware?
Yes — and Tappan is where we do more of this work than almost anywhere else. 18th- and 19th-century mortise and rim locks, skeleton-key interior doors, period hardware that's been in place since before electricity. We handle extraction carefully, source period-appropriate parts where available, and are honest about when a lock has reached the end of its serviceable life versus when it's worth preserving. We don't treat historic hardware like it's interchangeable with modern locks.
Can I get a quote before you come out?
Yes for standard work. For historic hardware jobs the quote is always after a walkthrough because the specific condition of each lock determines the right approach. No charge to come look and give you an honest number.
I'm not sure if I need a locksmith. Can I just call to ask?
Yes. Especially in older Tappan homes, sometimes the right answer is an adjustment rather than a locksmith dispatch — a door that's settled, a strike plate that's shifted, a humidity-swollen frame. We'd rather talk it through on the phone than make a 40-minute drive for something you can fix in five minutes.
