Car key won't turn?
We fix it where your car is.

If your car key won't turn in the ignition, gets stuck halfway, or broke off inside — that's our specialty. We come to your driveway or wherever the car is parked, figure out what's actually wrong (almost always the key wore out, not the whole ignition), and fix it on the spot. No tow. No dealer wait. And 99 times out of 100, you walk away with the same key you came with. Call (845) 490-8899.

What's going on with your key

My key won't turn at all. This is the #1 call we get — and the thing that's usually worn out is the key, not the lock. Years of pushing it in and out have polished the edges down. Sometimes the key is almost knife-thin (we see this on Nissan and Toyota a lot). With a worn-out key, the lock has nothing to grip and the key just spins or sticks. In most cases we cut you a fresh copy from your original key pattern, and your car starts again. About 20 minutes on-site.

My key turns halfway and then stops. This one is usually a Honda story. When the key wears down, it pushes too hard against the little metal pieces inside the lock and bends them out of shape. From then on, even a brand-new key won't turn — the inside of the lock has to be fixed before any key will work. We do that on the spot. Your same key still works when we're done.

My key is stuck and won't come out. Don't yank it with pliers — that turns a quick fix into an expensive one. Pull up the directions and give us a call. We get the key out cleanly without scratching the inside of the lock. Most of the time the lock is fine afterwards. Sometimes it's worn enough that we recommend fixing the inside while we're already there.

My key broke off inside. Same advice — don't push it deeper trying to fish it out. We carry tools made for this job and pull broken keys out without damaging the lock around them. Once it's out, we tell you honestly whether your existing key was already so worn it was going to break again (cut a fresh one from the pattern), or whether something inside the lock made the key snap (fix the lock).

My steering wheel is locked and the key won't turn. That's not actually the lock — it's the steering column safety. Hold the steering wheel firmly to the left or right (whichever feels like it wants to give), and turn the key while keeping pressure on the wheel. About 70% of the time, that's it. If it doesn't release, the steering lock mechanism itself has failed and we open up the column and fix it on the spot.

The key turns but the car still won't start. This one isn't the lock at all — it's the little chip in your key talking to the car. When that chip stops being recognized, the engine won't start even though everything feels right when you turn the key. We diagnose this on-site and either reprogram the chip or cut a fresh key with a fresh chip. Same call, same visit.

Why older cars give out — what we see by brand. Most ignition problems aren't really about the car. They're about the key. Toyota and Nissan (Camrys, Corollas, Altimas, Sentras): the cutting edge of the key gets thin from years of use — sometimes almost knife-thin. A fresh key cut from the original pattern usually solves it, about 20 minutes on-site. Honda (Accord, Civic, CR-V): the worn key bends the metal pieces inside the lock. Even a brand-new key won't work in there — the inside of the lock has to be fixed first. We carry the parts. Ford, Chrysler / Dodge, GM: a mix. Older F-150s have a steering-column lock that seizes. Chrysler minivans wear the ignition spring. GM full-size trucks usually have both a worn key and a worn lock at the same time. We carry parts for all of them.

The line that matters: 99 times out of 100, you walk away with the same key you came with. That's the whole reason people call a locksmith for this instead of the dealer. The dealer replaces the whole ignition and then has to re-key your doors and trunk to match the new lock — often a $1,200–$2,000 bill. We just fix what wore out, and the keychain you've had for ten years still works on your car. No new fobs to buy. No new keys to program.

How an ignition call works

You call and tell us what's happening
Year, make, and model of the car, and what the key does when you try it — won't turn at all, turns halfway, stuck, broken inside, or something else. 30 seconds on the phone. We bring the right parts.
We come to where the car is
Driveway, parking lot, mechanic's lot — wherever it's sitting. Most Rockland County addresses are 20–45 minutes from our Spring Valley shop. No tow.
We look at it and give you the price first
Never after. We tell you which of three things you're dealing with (fresh key, fix the inside of the lock, or replace the lock) and the firm price for each. You decide before any tools come out.
We do the work on-site
Fresh key cut: about 20 minutes. Fixing the inside of the lock: 45–90 minutes. Replacing the whole lock: 60–120 minutes. Steering column work adds 30–45 minutes. All in your driveway.
We test it before we leave
Start the car, shut it off, repeat. Check that the steering lock engages and releases. Make sure the key feels right in your hand. If anything is off, we fix it before we go.
One-year warranty
If it feels off in the days or weeks after, call us — we come back. We don't treat warranty calls as inconveniences.

How we price ignition work

We always tell you the price BEFORE we start, never after. Once we look at the car, you'll land in one of these three buckets and we quote the firm number on the spot. No mystery, no last-minute surprises.

Worn key damaged the lock
Fix the inside of the lock
Quoted on inspection
The little metal pieces inside got damaged from a worn key (very common on Honda). We open the lock and fix the inside without removing it from your car. Your same key still works when we're done. 45–90 minutes.
Lock seized or damaged
Replace the whole lock
Quoted on inspection
Damage went too deep or the steering-column lock failed entirely. We install a new lock on-site, match it to your existing key when possible, and handle any chip programming. 60–120 minutes. No tow.
Specialty work
Remote start interference
Quoted on inspection
An aftermarket remote start damaged the ignition or is now interfering with the factory key. We diagnose on-site, fix the lock, and tell you honestly whether the remote start needs to come out or can stay.

Common questions

My key used to turn fine — why won't it turn now?
Almost always your key got worn down over years of use. The edges that used to grip the lock are now too smooth or too thin. Most of the time we cut you a fresh copy from your original key pattern, you put it on your keychain, and the problem is solved. Sometimes the worn key already damaged the inside of the lock — in that case we fix the lock too, but your same key still works.
Do I need to tow my car to a dealer?
99% of the time, no. We come to your driveway with all the parts and tools needed. The dealer is the most expensive option because they replace the whole ignition and then have to re-key all your other locks to match. We fix what's broken and keep your existing key working. Tow trucks alone cost $150–$300 — and that's before any work. Skip the tow.
Will my same key still work when you're done?
99 times out of 100, yes. That's the whole point of calling us instead of the dealer. We fix what wore out — usually the key itself, sometimes the inside of the lock — but the keychain you've had for years still works on your car when we leave. No new fobs to buy or program.
How much does this cost?
We quote before we start, never after. Once we see the car we tell you which of three buckets you're in (fresh key, fix the lock inside, replace the lock) and the firm price. You decide before any tools come out. If you call around for quotes blind over the phone, you're getting a guess — the only honest number comes after a 10-minute on-site look.
How long does the visit take?
20 minutes for a fresh key cut. 45–90 minutes for fixing the inside of the lock. 60–120 minutes for replacing the whole lock. Steering column work adds another 30–45 minutes. We give you the time estimate together with the price, up front.
Why does this even happen?
Wear. Every time you put your key in and turn it, the edges of the key wear down a tiny amount, and so does the inside of the lock. After 10–15 years on most cars it adds up to enough wear that the key can't turn anymore. Cars driven daily for 10+ years see this often. Cars driven occasionally rarely see it. We see it most on Honda Accord and Civic, Toyota Camry and Corolla, Nissan Altima and Sentra, and Ford F-150 — the cars people keep the longest.
My key broke off in the lock. Can you get it out?
Yes. Don't try to fish it out with pliers — that almost always pushes it deeper and makes the fix more expensive. We have tools made specifically for pulling broken keys out without scratching the inside of the lock. Once it's out we tell you honestly whether your existing key was the cause (cut a fresh one) or whether the lock had a problem that caused the break (fix the lock).
I had a remote start installed and now my key doesn't work. What happened?
Aftermarket remote starts sometimes damage the ignition or interfere with how the key talks to the car. We see this often — usually the shop that installed the remote start either stressed the lock mechanically or wired something that's now confusing the ignition. We diagnose on-site, fix the lock, and tell you honestly whether the remote start needs to come out or whether it can stay.
What car makes do you handle?
Pretty much everything on the road — Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep, GM (Chevy / GMC / Buick / Cadillac), Subaru, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, Volvo, Mini. For very new luxury cars (last 2–3 years) or rare exotics we'll be honest on the phone if it's not something we can do on-site.
Do you warranty the work?
Yes. One year on the labor, and the parts we install (locks, key-cylinder kits) carry the manufacturer's warranty. If anything feels off in the days or weeks after, call us and we come back. We service what we install, and we don't treat warranty calls as a hassle.
